Sadly, there are many families in NH and VT with economically insecure situations who are unable to pay for a loved one’s funeral.
The Phaneuf Family Foundation is a 501(c)3) charitable nonprofit providing grants for New Hampshire and Vermont residents who are unable to pay the full cost of a funeral.
“Sadly, there are many families in NH and VT with economically insecure situations who are unable to pay for a loved one’s funeral. Whether it’s patients in nursing homes who have no family when they pass or families not able to come up with funds for a burial or cremation, there was a gap that needed to be bridged,” said Arthur “Buddy” Phaneuf, Chairman of the Board of Trustees. “We’re dedicated to providing resources for all New Hampshire and Vermont residents to receive a respectful funeral. The foundation provides us the ability to assist families in need, as well as those who pass away without family to honor them.”
Why there is a need
Financial assistance is available through city, town and state welfare departments to New Hampshire and Vermont families who cannot afford the total cost of a cremation or funeral service. However, welfare departments will typically pay an average of $750, and the least expensive service at funeral homes in New Hampshire averages $1,000, leaving a monetary gap. Financial assistance from the foundation is available for families using funeral homes other than Phaneuf. The foundation provides grants of up to $1,000.
The foundation has provided more than 100 families with grants.
In year one, the foundation was able to grant 41% of the requests it received; in year three, 67% received grants – an increase of 62%.
The number of requests for grants grew from 40 in the first year to 63 in year three, an increase of 57%.
